BRASILIA, November 10, 2014 – The current anti-poverty policy agenda at the global level – with special emphasis on Brazil’s experience – will be the topic of the First International Seminar WWP – A WORLD WITHOUT POVERTY, to be held on November 18 and 19, 2014, at the Royal Tulip Hotel in Brasilia.  Brazilian authorities and experts from around the world were invited to participate in this first meeting.
The first day of the seminar brings together James Foster (George Washington University, USA), Murray Leibbrandt (University of Cape Town, South Africa) and Selim Jaham (Director of the UNDP’s Human Development Report) in a panel on the concept of poverty. The Brazilian experience will be the subject a session attended by Brazil’s Minister of Social Development and Fight against Hunger, Tereza Campello; the World Bank’s chief economist of Human Development for Latin America and the Caribbean, Margaret Grosh; Professor Nora Lustig, from Tulane University (USA); and Professor Emir Sader, from the State University of Rio de Janeiro.
The following day, senior vice president and chief economist of the World Bank, Kaushik Basu; the director of the UNDP’s Department for Development Policy, Madgy Martínez-Solimán; and the president of the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA), Sergei Soares, will debate whether a world without poverty is, indeed, possible. To conclude the event, the director of Global Poverty Practice at the World Bank, Ana Ravenga; the Minister of the SAE, Marcelo Neri; and Francisco Menezes, from IBASE / Action Aid, will present a series of public proposals for a scenario beyond extreme poverty.
The First International Seminar WWP – A WORLD WITHOUT POVERTY is an event promoted by the WWP Initiative, a result of a partnership between the World Bank, the Federal Government of Brazil, the Ministry of Social Development and Fight against Hunger, the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA), the Secretariat of Strategic Affairs of the Presidency of the Republic, the UNDP and Policy International.
