Within a cash transfer program that benefits about 14 million households in Brazil, an effective communication between government and beneficiaries is one of the major challenges to avoid misinformation and ensure access to rights. That was the theme of the first presentation of “The Brazilian Experience on Social Protection Programs” webinar series, composed of four meetings organized by the Brazil Learning Initiative for a World without Poverty (WWP) in partnership with socialprotection.org, a knowledge sharing platform.

The webinar also addressed Bolsa Família‘s social control and participation. Both are principles included in the 2004 law that created the program (10.836) and in the subsequent regulation (Decree No. 5.209/2004).

Over the last 10 years, social participation management and access to information were highly improved. Initially, for example, it was not possible to send personalized messages on the benefits through the bank statement, neither the notification via correspondence for those that didn’t comply with the program’s conditionalities.

Among the topics addressed are:

• Communication tools
• New technologies
• Legal framework
• Intergovernmental relations
• Intersectoral coordination
