Internationally referenced researchers discuss social policies to overcome multidimencional poverty.

Brasilia, 18 November: Can there be a world without poverty? What are the public policies that lead to overcoming it and when it is possible to say a country that has overcome poverty? These questions are at the centre of discussion at the first International SeminarWWP – A World without Poverty, held on Tuesday (18) and Wednesday (19) November in Brasilia.

James Foster (professor at George Washington University), Ana Ravenga(Senior Director of the Poverty Global Practice at the World Bank Group),Magdy Martinez-Solimán and Selim Jahan (experts on poverty at the United Nations Development Programme), Murray Leibbrandt (professor at the University of Cape Town), and Kaushik Basu (Senior Vice President and Chief Economist of the World Bank), are among the guest speakers.
The Minister of Social Development and Fight against Hunger, Tereza Campello, will present the achievements of the Brazil Without Extreme Poverty Plan, which has already lifted 22 million people out of extreme poverty.
In addition to encouraging discussion about overcoming poverty, the Seminar will discuss models of management and coordination of social policies and strategies for inclusive development. The Seminar takes place at an important moment in the debate concerning extreme poverty around the world. The United Nations is preparing to set the new Sustainable Development Goals which will replace the MDGs and be pursued globally. The targets will be set in less than a year, in September 2015.
The first International Seminar WWP – A World without Poverty – is sponsored by the Brazilian Learning Initiative for a World without Poverty (WWP). The WWP is the result of a partnership between the World Bank, the Ministry of Social Development and Fight against Hunger of Brazil (MDS), the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA), the Secretariat of Strategic Affairs of the Presidency of the Republic (SAE /PR) and the UNDP’s International Policy Centre for Inclusive Growth (IPC-IG). The Seminar is also supported by the Rio +Centre.
