According to the Minister of Social Development and Fight against Hunger, Tereza Campello, if we are to achieve a world without poverty, “we must build paths that include political decisions.” She stressed that overcoming poverty and promoting development and social inclusion are goals that benefit the entire country. “There has long been a debate on whether poverty is a ‘necessary good ‘. However, we now recognize that overcoming poverty and reducing inequality are not only matters of social justice, rights and citizenship. This is positive for the economy as a whole, for all of us,” the Minister said.

As pointed out by Ms. Campello, for nearly two years the Ministry of Social Development and Fight against Hunger (MDS) and its partners have been involved in an effort to multiply experiences and fulfill this great dream – “as stated in the name of this event.” “We shall discuss how to measure this dream, as well as possible ways forward to make it a reality.”

According to the UNDP resident representative to Brazil and director of the International Policy Centre for Inclusive Growth (IPC-IG), Jorge Chediek, now that countries are in the process of developing the Sustainable Development Goals for after 2015, Brazil’s example demonstrates that it has successfully incorporated the Millennium Development Goals, as the country’s “DNA contains the policies to eradicate the burden of hunger.”

“Brazil’s objective goes beyond lessening burdens, like poverty and hunger, in the span of a generation. The country has shown that it is, indeed, possible to bring changes to not just marginal issues, but to the actual core of the problem,” he said.

According to the Minister of the Secretariat of Strategic Affairs (SAE), Marcelo Neri, this important meeting will include discussions about ways to measure poverty and use experiences from other countries to reduce inequalities. He noted that Brazil’s experiences in this area have become an export commodity, to be adapted to the realities of other countries. “This is the best face of Brazil: a country that looks to the future and rescues the poor who linger in the past” he said.

The director of World Bank Brazil, Deborah Wetzel, stated that the First International Seminar WWP takes place at a strategic point in time – for the country and for the entire world. “Poverty reduction and inclusive development are now global issues,” she said. “Brazil has been an example in the construction and implementation of policies in these areas.”
Ms. Wetzel also pointed out that poverty elimination and shared prosperity are some of the World Bank’s objectives. She praised the exchange of experiences about the execution of social policies focused on poverty reduction.
The First International Seminar WWP – A World Without Poverty is promoted by the Brazilian Learning Initiative for a World Without Poverty (www.wwp.org.br).
